House Hunting

Well, we've started it. So far we've talked to a bank, got pre-approved, seen 1 house, driven by a couple dozen others and looked at countless listings. It's been great fun, actually. Hopefully we'll find something sometime this year. It would be kinda nice if moving-time is during some decent weather, too - but i'll be satisfied if we can find sometime we both really like.

The house we looked at on saturday was one out here on Milligan hwy - only a minute or two from where we live now. It wasn't a bad little house, but we ultimately decided there was too much expensive stuff we'd want to do with it right away for it to be practical. We're all for learning to do lots of minor-to-moderate projects for home improvement, but we're hoping not to have to learn them all at once ;). We've got a few more we're interested in looking at and Robin's still giving us stuff. And we're in no rush.

I'd also like to state for the record, that it's snowing out here, in a major way. I'd also point out that this is a couple weeks after milligan's so-called "spring break".

It was less snow and more.... slushee.

A lot of it actually came down...and some even stuck for a while. Last night it was coming down pretty heavily as we drove from Erwin to J.C.

I hit some frozen rain and lots of normal rain heading over the mountain. Thankfully nothing too severe. btw Derek Webb performed ALL of his latest album for us..... holy moly.

To date, we've toured 5 houses, driven by at least 25, and looked through 40+ listings. Admittedly, this isn't many, but one of the houses we went to see yesterday really got our interest. It's 717 Georgia Street here in Johnson City. Here's a brief list of what we saw: Pros: -In good condition, inside and out. -Large. Over 1400 sq feet. 3 bedrooms, all decent-sized. 3 add-on rooms, decent-sized bathroom with washer/dryer hookups. -Nice, decent-sized kitchen, new dishwasher and nice, flat-top stove/oven. -In south Johnson City, about 3 miles from where we are now. Nice neighborhood. Dead-end street (i.e. Little traffic). -Brick. The add-ons are sided, but the house itself is brick. -Large, fenced backyard, decent-sized frontyard. Has trees. -Nice hardwood floors. -Heat Pump with digital thermostat. -Decent-sized front deck. I like decks. -Large, bay window in livingroom. Decent-sized windows in other rooms. Cons: -No basement or attic, only crawl-spaces. Means less random storage area. -Only one bathroom. -Doesn't come with refridgerator. -Mirrors in odd places. Really. -Steep driveway/parking area, not much parking (3 cars tops), though there's more than adequate yard room for expanding the driveway and parking on the street seems acceptable. As far as we're concerned, the pros majorly outweigh the cons. This was the first house we've looked at that we've both really liked in terms of both features on paper and appearance in person. It's also the first one we've seen that doesn't have at least one major con. The cons i listed above are all things we agreed were considerably less important to us than most of the pros. It's a beautiful house and wouldn't take much beyond moving our stuff in to make it the way we want it. (as opposed to some of the others which would involve de-wallpapering, painting, small remodeling projects, etc) Robin is looking into some things on it for us, and then we decide whether to go after it. Personally, I think we should. ~PS

We were seriously thinking about it, but we ultimately decided to keep looking. Not that we don't like the house - because we do - but more because we haven't seen very many and it's unlikely that we'll never find something we like just as well. ~PS
